The specialty of Pediatric dentistry developed to address the special concern for children’s dental health. Most of the dental diseases and problems associated with the developing dentition have their origins during childhood. Therefore, special understanding and care is required of childhood dentistry.
In India and most other developing countries, the dental health of children has been neglected. A strong background in the development and growth of dentofacial structures, timely prevention, and interception of iatrogenic problems and dental diseases will prepare the dental professionals to adequately deal with the dental health problems of children.
Academic activities revolve around competency-based and evidence-based didactic and clinical programs, school and community clinical activities. There is a lot of emphasis on professional etiquette, scientifically based problem solving with the basic aim to bring forth modern dental health professionals who understand the oral health and sensitivities of the child population.
